This group, co-sponsored by Henry County Partk & Recreation and the Dan River Basin Association, will meet on Thursdays to explore a different trail every week. Weather permitting, we will meet at designated locations throughout the county and sometimes in nearby parts of neighboring counties for enjoyable hikes. April 15, 8 AM – High 5 at Hanging Rock (10 mile/5 mile). 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, NC. Join us for the 4th annual High 5 at Hanging Rock. Participants will trek over ten miles of park trails to reach five of the highest elevations within Hanging Rock State Park. They will summit Moore’s Knob, Cooks Wall and Hanging Rock mountains and pass by two prominent rock outcrops, Wolf Rock and House Rock, along their journey. Due to the length, change in elevation and trail conditions, this will be a strenuous hike or run and will test everyone’s physical abilities. There is also a 5-mile option that summits only Moore’s Knob for those looking for less of a challenge.

April 22, 7:35 AM. Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon in Roanoke. Starts at Elmwood Park. 505 Williamson Road SE, Roanoke. The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon Series has earned its title as “America’s Toughest Road Marathon” by challenging runners with over 7,430 ft. in elevation change, more than any other road marathon in the U.S. This race is the ONLY marathon that runs along the famously scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and proceeds from this non-profit event benefit the parkway and a dozen local charities every year. The full, half, relay and 10k all prove equally challenging yet rewarding on this mountainous course, and all runners are rewarded with a unique finishers’ medals, shirts and local craft beer at the festival-like finish in downtown Roanoke. For those who need even more than just extreme elevation change can run the course twice with the official Blue Ridge Double (sells out annually).

June 4 – IRONMAN 70.3. North American TriClub Championship – Southeast. Roanoke. The one-lap swim will take place in the warm clear waters of Carvins Cove Reservoir. Average water temperatures in early June are in the 70s. The event will start with a rolling start, where athletes self-seed based on anticipated total swim time. Once out of the water, athletes will take on the 56-mile bike course that is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Athletes will depart from Carvins Cove in Roanoke County and continue east into beautiful Botetourt County towards the Town of Buchanan, a quaint, walkable town with antique shops and a great view of the James River. It is the starting point for an epic five-mile climb on Route 43 to the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance. The ride will end at the beautiful River’s Edge Park, next to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, in the heart of Roanoke, Va. The course follows the paved Roanoke River Greenway path along the banks of the spectacular Roanoke River. The finish is conveniently in River’s Edge Park.

The relay course takes runners along the Greenway from Greensboro to High Point in a 16.1 mile route. This will be a relay in which 4 hand off locations will be set. Teams can be comprised of 4 members, 2 members or 1 brave participant! There will be a shuttle back for solo runners. For your $30.00 donation (per person) you will a get a pair of pickle running shorts. All proceeds from this fun run will go to the Go Far-Fleet Feet Lace Up Program. November 10, 7 PM – Mike Oregano LIVE at Mountain Valley Brewing. 4220 Mountain Valley Road, Axton. Performing in a unique Jazz/Rock/Reggae style, Mike Oregano has fully commercialized both the aesthetic and sonic details of the “One Man Band” concept. Mike uses his feet to hit the drums as well as an array of fully intuitive pedal boards complete with: loopers, bass splits, synthesizers, etc. He records the rhythm (guitar and bass) on the spot, and layers over it live with drums while singing and soloing on his guitar simultaneously.

Join us in November for the fastest half marathon course in the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina! This event was created specifically to find the flattest course possible inside the Greensboro city limits (thus the two loops). Post-race will be celebrated with vendors, music, food, beer, and more. If you’re looking for a fall half marathon, 5k, or 1 mile at an event with a lot of spirit, we got you covered. The last opportunity to register will be at the expo on Friday, November 17. Online registration will be open on Friday, 11/17 but you must pickup your packet at the expo. There will be NO packet pickup on race day. This is the last race in the North Carolina Road Mega Medal series.

November 18, 7 PM – Anita Baker, The Songstress Tour with Babyface at the Greensboro Coliseum. 1921 W Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC. The tour celebrates Baker’s 40 years as a music icon in the industry since the release of her debut album, The Songstress, was released in 1983. These dates mark the first time she has been on a full tour since 1995 and it is also the first time The Songstress will be performing her classic hits live since winning back the rights to her masters.

November 29 through December 23 – Elf: The Musical at Mill Mountain Theatre. 1 Market Square SE, Roanoke. Elf the Musical is based on the 2003 hit modern-day holiday classic by New Line Cinema, Elf. Similarly, Elf the Musical follows Buddy, a young orphan, who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s toy bag on Christmas Eve and is transported to the North Pole. Buddy is raised as an honorary Elf, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
